View Full Version : Emmitt vs. Barry

Superstar columnist Kevin Sherrington uses Emmitt Smith as an example while making the point that Barry Bonds isn't the best baseball player ever just because of a bunch of stats.
Kevin asks whether the NFL's all-time leading rusher was really better than Jim Brown or Walter Payton or Barry Sanders. My answers: no, no, heck yes.
Sanders was certainly a more spectacular runner than Emmitt. His highlight reel is much more fun to watch. He's the best make-you-miss guy there's ever been.
But Emmitt was everything that Sanders wasn't. He was an outstanding pass blocker, something Sanders either wasn't capable of or willing to do. He was the best goal-line back in league history, while Sanders watched from the sideline when the Lions needed the toughest yards.
Emmitt, like Brown and Payton, was what Bill Parcells would call a "football-playing dude" whose passion and toughness set the tone for Super Bowl teams. Sanders was a dude who played football -- often in breathtaking fashion, but never with the grit of the few backs who were greater than him.

That could very well be Ventrue, but looking back at both career and call me
a homer for saying this..but Barry was never anything more then flash and the
pocket watch everyone got caught being hypnotized on..while Emmitt was the
guy you could set your watch to with out it missing a second

It's the offseason...nothing to talk about. Everything happening now, which is very little, is happening behind closed doors.

Walter was great but greatness is passed and when Emmitt torched the records
Payton held..it never became a question of who was better? not by opinion but
by fact, Emmitt became the man and that is the way it will stay regardless of
anything that we say
his career and numbers say it all

He also played longer than Payton did -- And he had an O-Line that was one of the best in the league -- SO to compare RB's from different team that were all GREAT is ludicrous when the variables are huge

So what? that still doesn't take away the fact that Emmitt was able to break
it when many others failed at accomplishing the same thing..Emmitt Smith and Walter both had heart and both were warriors and Walter knew some day that either Emmitt or Barry would succeed him as the greatest of all time. Walter counted on it to happen, He wanted it to happen he loved Emmitt like a son
and Walter got his wish because Emmitt did it and broke his record to surpass
him as the greatest of all time

its useless to argue this.......you can argue it til someone dies....its not going to matter....athletes live by stats....the stats go with Emmitt...end of story.

He had on O-line that was "the best" , 2, 3 yrs tops.. And even when Emmitt was out of the lineup.. Other Rb's couldn't find the holes that Emmitt did.. Friggin' ridiculous penalizing emmitt because he was more durable and whom he played with..
In that case..
Jerry fucking Rice ISN"T EVEN CLOSE TO THE BEST WR EVER... Period. Why, you sorry fucks ask>????
Umm,, let's see.
B.Walsh, J. Montana, R. Craig. D. Clark. Brent Jones, Tom Rathman, J. Taylor..
Need I go on..?
Didn't think so..
Emmitt,
That's it, accept no substitutes..
He was always, too slow. too small, johnson ran him to the ground and he kept coming..
