Where does Dante end up now that he's not wanted in Miami?

Dolphins tell Culpepper they're 'going in different direction'

DAVIE, Fla. -- Quarterback Trent Green is finally with the Miami Dolphins in South Florida, where Daunte Culpepper's time is running out.

Green passed his physical with the Dolphins on Wednesday, completing a deal in which Miami acquired him from the Kansas City Chiefs for a fifth-round draft pick in 2008. Green's agent, Jim Steiner, said the Chiefs may get a fourth-rounder instead, depending on how Green fares in Miami this season.

The team scheduled a news conference Wednesday afternoon to announce the deal. It's expected that Green will be on the Dolphins' practice field Friday when the team opens a three-day minicamp.

Culpepper wants to be there for minicamp, too -- but that's hardly a sure thing. A few hours before the Green trade became official, the Dolphins told Culpepper they "are going in a different direction at the QB position," according to Culpepper, who is resisting that plan.

"They would like to trade me in order to 'get something for me,"' Culpepper, who serves as his own agent, wrote in an e-mail. "However, it is my position that I have already been down that road and I am not interested in being traded."

He may not have a choice.

Culpepper is due to make $5.5 million this season, played in only four games a year ago because of right knee problems and is still trying to recover from major surgery on that joint in 2005. He'd been largely a spectator for most Miami offseason practices so far, but received clearance from orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews and members of the Dolphins' medical staff to resume football activity earlier this week.

"They have told me throughout the offseason that I am under contract to the Dolphins," Culpepper wrote. "Therefore, it will be up to them to either keep me under contract or release me. In the meantime I will continue to work out at the facility with the team and prepare myself for training camp, wherever it may be."

In 5½ seasons as Kansas City's starter, Green threw for 21,459 yards -- an average of 244 per game -- and 118 touchdowns while completing 62 percent of his passes. He missed eight games last season because of a concussion suffered in the season opener, and didn't believe he'd have a chance to fairly compete with Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard for the starting job in KC in 2007.

So he wanted a trade and worked out a new contract several weeks ago with the Dolphins, who traded for Culpepper before the 2006 season.

"My position on Trent is that the Dolphins should get the best players that they can and let them compete for the starting job," Culpepper said Tuesday after learning of the reported trade.

The Dolphins clearly never intended to keep both Green and Culpepper. The team recently re-signed backup Cleo Lemon to a one-year deal, and chose Brigham Young quarterback John Beck in the second round of this year's draft after passing on a chance to take Notre Dame's Brady Quinn with the ninth overall pick -- which the Dolphins used on receiver-returner Ted Ginn Jr. of Ohio State.

Green would have made $7.2 million this season with the Chiefs. The Dolphins offered the Chiefs a sixth-round pick long before April's draft, but Kansas City reportedly insisted on a fourth-round selection.

Green and Cameron have a long relationship. Both are former Indiana quarterbacks, and Cameron was Washington Redskins quarterbacks coach when Green was a third-stringer there in 1995 and 1996.

I think he will go back to Minnesota -- back to the beginning -- He would be a real good Mentor to the 3 Young QB's in that organization --- Where ever he does go though he won't be a Starter

Peace

Problem will be his salary and that knee of his. Nobody is going to hand him a starting spot but once he's healthy he is a good QB who has plenty of miles left on him. My guess is Tampa. Hey why not have 10 QB's on the roster. One of them would have to work out. :lmao:

DAVIE, Fla. -- Trent Green's first practice with the Miami Dolphins was apparently Daunte Culpepper's finale in South Florida.

Frustrated by the team's decision to let him only participate in individual drills, Culpepper walked off the practice field -- accompanied by a member of Miami's security staff -- about an hour into Friday's start of a three-day minicamp and vowed that he'd block the Dolphins' plans to trade him.

It was the latest entry in an up-and-down week for Culpepper. On Monday, he was told his surgically rebuilt right knee was strong enough to let him practice. Tuesday, he learned the Dolphins were trading with Kansas City for Green. Wednesday, the team told Culpepper they wanted to trade him, prompting his Thursday request for a release.

"Any team that's interested in my services, just sit tight," Culpepper said. "I'm not going to agree to a trade."

Dolphins coach Cam Cameron said he couldn't give any details about the team's plans for Culpepper, but acknowledged that the fact Culpepper is his own agent does complicate matters.

"We've got to do what we think is in the best interest of the Miami Dolphins with the player in mind and his family in mind," Cameron said. "That's where we're at."

Culpepper was among five quarterbacks -- himself, Green, Cleo Lemon, rookie John Beck and Gibran Hamdan -- when the first of Friday's two practices began. He started the day alongside them all, lofting easy passes to receivers and doing other simple drills. But when it came time for more team-specific work, Culpepper was little more than a spectator.

He claimed Dolphins quarterbacks coach Terry Shea told him he was being barred from team drills, so Culpepper left the field and headed into the weight room, where he remained for the rest of the morning workout.

"I thought I'd be able to at least do something," Culpepper said.

Green said he and Culpepper spoke briefly before practice, but only mainly about past knee injuries and rehab stints -- avoiding the Dolphins' current quarterback situation.

"I didn't think it was strange," Green said. "He was out there going through some reps and individual drills, but there was no awkwardness on my part."

The Dolphins want to trade Culpepper, telling him so just before completing the Green trade and essentially giving last year's marquee quarterback acquisition notice that his time in South Florida was ending.

But Culpepper, who is his own agent, wants to choose his next destination himself.

"He's still a great guy," Dolphins defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday said. "He's been a great teammate. But this is a business ... and I feel for him."

Culpepper suffered a serious right knee injury in 2005, was traded by the Minnesota Vikings to Miami for a second-round pick that offseason and surprised many by starting the Dolphins' first four games last season. He was hampered by knee problems, was sacked 21 times in those four games and ultimately was shut down for the remainder of the year.

He missed most of the Dolphins' offseason sessions because of continued knee rehabilitation, and said Friday's practice was "a test" of where he is physically.

"I still have a ways to go," Culpepper said.

Meanwhile, Green was on the field with his new team for the first time. He wanted out of Kansas City because he felt the Chiefs wouldn't give him a fair chance to beat Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard for the starting QB job there this year, and worked out a contract with Miami several weeks ago.

"It was good to get out there," Green said. "I've been anticipating this for some time. It was nice to get out there."

It took more than two months for the Dolphins and Chiefs to agree on terms. Kansas City eventually settled for a fifth-round pick in exchange for Green, and could wind up with Miami's fourth-round selection in 2008 depending on how the 36-year-old quarterback fares this season.

Many Dolphins, even those who wanted to see Culpepper succeed in Miami, welcomed Green with open arms.

"He's a leader," Holliday said of Green, his former teammate in Kansas City. "And that's what we need right now."

Culpepper is owed $5.5 million for the upcoming season and said the structure of his current deal -- which runs through 2013 and is worth $51.5 million -- will make it nearly impossible for another team to trade for him.

If Culpepper doesn't restructure that deal, it's a virtual certainty no other team would be willing to make a trade with Miami for him.

"I definitely expect to be released," Culpepper said. "I will not be traded."

Jacksonville has shown a lot of interest in Daunte -- I really think this deal is done if in fact he gets released --- No one I mean no one wants the contract he has -- It would benefit both Miami and Daunte to just release him and not drag this out and keep it in the news. It can and may have a huge impact on the Dolphins organization as a whole.

Is this is the next big off season soap opera? For the sake of Miami and Daunte I hope it isn't.

NAPA, Calif. -- Free agent quarterback Daunte Culpepper will work out for the Oakland Raiders on Tuesday, two weeks after being released by the Miami Dolphins.

Culpepper held a private workout for a member of the Raiders' personnel department in Florida on Monday. The 30-year-old quarterback did well enough there to persuade the team to fly him out to California for an additional workout.

"Anytime that we have a chance to investigate something that can help our team win, were going to do it," Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said. "Obviously Daunte is something that weve been looking into for a little bit. This is kind of the climax of it, working him out tomorrow."

Culpepper began 2006 as Miami's starter but had trouble with his mobility and was sacked 21 times in the first four games. The Dolphins shut him down so he could continue rehabbing and eventually placed him on injured reserve. When they acquired Trent Green in a trade with Kansas City this offseason, Culpepper became expendable.

The Dolphins tried unsuccessfully to trade Culpepper a year after acquiring him from Minnesota. When Miami could find no takers, the former Pro Bowl quarterback was released on July 17. Culpepper met with Tampa Bay two days later but did not receive a contract offer from the Bucs.

The Raiders have an interest in Culpepper in part due to the holdout of No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell. Russell has yet to sign a contract with Oakland, and Kiffin on Sunday indicated negotiations between the two sides had slowed.

Kiffin acknowledged that Russell's situation was a precursor to bringing Culpepper in for a workout.

"Sure it is," Kiffin said. "You've gotta protect your team [and] put yourselves in the best position to win and make sure that you have the right depth and competition at each spot."

The Oakland Raiders have signed free agent QB Daunte Culpepper, Raiders Head Coach Lane Kiffin announced after this afternoon's Training Camp practice at the team's Napa Valley Training Complex. The 6'4", 265-pound Culpepper spent last season with the Miami Dolphins. Culpepper, who is entering his ninth season in the NFL, spent the first seven years of his NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings.
"We are very excited to have Daunte, and add him to the mix and see if he can help us," Coach Kiffin said. "We think that he adds definite competition."

The former Central Florida star has played in 85 league games with 84 starts, and has completed 1,759 or 2,741 pass attempts for 21,091 yards, 137 TDs, and 89 INTs. His best season came in 2004 when he threw for 4,717 yards and 39 touchdowns.

Culpepper was originally selected in the first round (11th overall) of the 1999 NFL Draft by Minnesota.
