Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher is reportedly already scouting possible teams for head coaching vacancies following the 2007 season.

At least if you believe a report Tuesday on Profootballtalk.com. The Washington Redskins, however, refute the claim in the report that Cowher has had at least one private talk with Redskins owner Daniel Snyder about the possibility of replacing Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs if he decides to step down following the season.

"No one at the Washington Redskins has had any meetings or discussions with Bill Cowher or anyone else regarding any coaching position with the Redskins," the team released in a statement.

That doesn't concur with Tuesday's report, which states per a source that Cowher has spoken with several teams about returning to the sidelines in 2008. The source also stated in the article that one of Cowher's main demands will be complete control over football operations.

The report lists the Redskins along with the Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers as possible jobs. Per the article, Cowher has begun the process of lining up a personal executive to run the front office, most notably Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert.

Colbert is currently under contract in Pittsburgh.

Cowher retired following a disappointing 8-8 season in 2006, just one season removed from the Steelers fifth Super Bowl championship. In winning his first, Cowher pulled a huge monkey off of his back and likely cemented his legacy following five other AFC Championship games, four ending in defeat at home.

In 15 seasons as head coach in Pittsburgh, Cowher compiled a 161-99-1 record and averaged nearly 10 wins during the regular season.

The following is a statement released by the Redskins in response to a report by the web site ProFootballTalk.com:
"No one at the Washington Redskins has had any meetings or discussions with Bill Cowher or anyone else regarding any coaching position with the Redskins."

for Cowhere to be named head coach, should Wade Phillips screw up real

Unfortunately that is probably going to be a real possibility. NY obviously is going to be on the market for a coach, and a high profile proven coach at that.

We addressed this story way before PFT did and we did it because we realized that BC would be a very popular choice, and from the looks of things in Panther Land, he would ideally be Carolina's first choice, assuming he would want to return to coaching.

One thing that people have to remember is that the Steelers still have the rights to Cowher's services, so for any team to enter into any talks with him without their permission would be tampering. I don't believe any rumors that I hear about any talks going on until I hear that the Steelers have given permission for people to talk to him.

Carolina is a possibility unless Fox really lights a fire under the Panthers. It's perfect: close to home, similar small market town (like Pittsburgh), similar style of football, and they already have a fairly good team built up.

Washington is a possibility as well, because it's somewhat close to NC, but I doubt it. I really don't see Cowher going to Dallas or NY either. Reason is simple: those are large market teams where the expectation is that the team will win right now. There will be very little patience from the ownership of any NFCE team for Cowher to build a team up and really develop it. Cowher wants a lucrative deal, and he wants to know that the owner of whatever team he ends up with will be patient when the team doesn't win right away. That effectively kills his chances at any NFCE team.

If Fox gets the axe, that's where Cowher will end up. Of course, it's possible that Kay steps in and effectively puts the kabosh on his coaching career period. Bill has said that he wouldn't even consider coaching again until his youngest daughter graduates from high school, which isn't for another two years. So this could all be moot. It's not like there wouldn't be teams looking to hire him two years from now if he decides to wait.

IMOVHO -- If in fact John Fox has a So So Year in Carolina -- Cowher will most likely go there and John Fox has stated that he wants to move back to the NY Metro Area -- So thats my take

It only makes sense if Cowher returned to the NFL as a head coach his choice would be Carolina. He owns a home in Raleigh and a beach home on the Outer Banks. Plus one of his daughters is attending N.C. State. Also, I wouldn't be suprised if he took the head coach position with the Wolf Pack just to stay close to home.
